Maybe, the belief that she is not worthy of redemption was inflicted by her father, who left Beck and her mom in order to start a happy, sober life with another woman. Thus, she starts cheating on Joe with a therapist. Even after achieving the staples of an ideal version of herself – a rising writing career, stable relationships, stable job (aside from grieving the loss of her loved ones), she does not feel that she deserves to be the best version of herself. Also, Beck is rarely writing – which is only a reason for Joe to interfere and help her become an idealized version of herself. She chooses people that trap her in circumstances she is unable to get out from – Peach (her now-dead best friend) is controlling and condescending, Blythe (her now-dead boyfriend) is uncommitting and is addicted to drugs. Then we learn that she uses self-sabotage to avoid failure – in writing and in relationships with partners and friends. In the beginning, Beck is an idealized version of a dreamy love interest, wishing to become a writer and looking for a good man. I really loved how we got to know Beck, the future victim of Joe, through contrasting characteristics that made her feel real. It is funny, revealing, clever, entertaining, and sometimes scary. As everything loved by girls, the series is good. Adding the fact that the main character, Joe – a serial killer – made many girls fall in love with him also added to the appearance of a superficial media, covering topics it could not handle well. The «You» series became popular, which is why I thought that I would not like it.
